The Suriname national football team is the national team of Suriname and is controlled by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond.
Although the former Dutch colony is located in South America, it competes in CONCACAF, together with Guyana and French Guiana. Suriname won the CFU Championship (Digicel Caribbean Cup predecessor) in 1978, were runners-up in 1979 and reached fourth place in 1994 and 1996. Unlike in the Netherlands Antilles, another former Dutch colony, it is ruled that players who move abroad to play in the Netherlands are not eligible to play for Suriname.[1] Many Suriname-born players and Dutch-born players of Surinamese descent, like Royston Drenthe, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Andwélé Slory, Ryan Babel, Aron Winter, Romeo Castelen, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink turned out to play for Oranje.
In 2008 Suriname entered the group stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying despite using only local players. With their two-leg victory over neighbours Guyana, Suriname faced Haiti, Costa Rica, and El Salvador in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification (CONCACAF) semi-finale round. Suriname has also qualified to the second round of the Caribbean Nations Cup 2008. The Surinaamse Voetbal Bond has signed an equipment sponsorship with the Dutch company COPA to last for four years.[2]

Suriname has participated in the qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup since 1938, but has never qualified for the finals. The Surinamese team, consisting of internationals Surinamese and Dutch players of Surinamese origin, placed second in the most recent PARBO Beer Cup behind French Guiana.
Over time, Suriname has produced a lot of footballers who chose to play for Netherlands, the former colonial rulers, including Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Aron Winter, Romeo Castelen, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Royston Drenthe. Players of Surinamese heritage such as Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit and Patrick Kluivert, who were born in the Netherlands, could have played for Suriname, but chose not to do so.
However, Edgar Davids, Jeremain Lens and Milano Koenders have represented Suriname in the PARBO Beer Cup, a tournament that is not organised by a recognised football confederation.
